[ mood | through with this stupid play ]

I made another mix CD, but this time I decided to make a video of it complete with visualizations, so you can play this video for 80 minutes of extremely varied music (unless you live in Germany where it's blocked).

I don't usually do themes but this has 3: First, inspired by and partially comprising the new They Might Be Giants album Nanobots, there's a section of very short songs of 100 seconds or less. Second, I included several songs with male and female vocalists. Third, I wanted to have as many different languages as possible. Total language count: 8.

I am looking to make a fanmix about Scrubs (aka Patrick/Robin) which is a GH couple. I am trying to come up with songs that represent their relationship from the time they met till the time they got married. I am having trouble because of the current storyline that they are involved in.

I am trying to find songs that represent "Love Beyond Reason"?

any type of genre will do.

Number one.  Does this forum have a mod staff?

Number two.  I am looking for someone to trade mixed cds with via snail mail.  i used to be on an lj community where we had members from all over the world and traded mixed cds.  It was a lot of fun, like having multiple musical pen pals that you got to know by exploring the music they loved.

Number Three:  Is that legal in this community?  Is anyone interested?

Hi, I made myself a mix CD. Instead of just listing the songs here, I will make it more interesting by including links to the songs, which I posted on my blip.fm account (many of which are just embedded YouTube videos), except some of them weren't available so I'm linking to mp3s for those. I've also included my thoughts on each song, as well as their lengths and years of release, which may provide context or something!!!

1: Roy Harper - Hors D'oeuvres (8:37) (1971): Roy Harper did the vocals on a Pink Floyd song (see below); that's how I found out about him. This song is very long and just has vocals and guitar, but I think it's fantastic. It sounds somewhere between Bob Dylan and Jethro Tull, but I don't like them as much.

2: Serj Tankian - Baby (3:29) (2007): A song from the guy from System of a Down. I recently saw a concert film where he claimed that this song came to him in a dream. It's possible, since the subconscious works that way sometimes; Keith Richards said that's how he came up with the main riff from the Rolling Stones song Satisfaction. If Serj did write this song in his sleep, it explains the chorus's extremely banal lyrics.

3: Rammstein - Frühling in Paris (4:44) (2009): A metal ballad, or if you want to be really specific, "Neue Deutsche Härte", which means "New German Hardness", teehee. It's in German, except when it's in French to steal lines from Edith Piaf.

4: Peter Gabriel - My Body is a Cage (6:07) (2010): This is from his new project where he covers a bunch of songs, and then the artists he covers cover his songs. This is the only one he did that I'm familiar with. I think it's great, but I read a review in Rolling Stone that criticized the song for being lifeless compared to the original. I disagree!

5: The Mars Volta - With Twilight As My Guide (7:52) (2009): Cedric Bixler-Zavala demonstrates the amazing things he can do with his voice, and my soul is torn to shreds in the process. Five minutes of song, then three minutes of fading out.

6: The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches - The Great Gig in the Sky (3:57) (2009): The Flaming Lips covered the entire Pink Floyd album Dark Side Of The Moon, along with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, which is the band of the nephew of Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips. They also had Henry Rollins recreate the philosophical mutterings by British people that were on the original album. This song additionally has someone named Peaches recreating the original wail by someone named Clare Torry. I enjoy this but it got bad reviews.

7: Pink Floyd - Have a Cigar (5:24) (1975): At first I thought Roy Harper's vocals were kind of bland, but I've come to appreciate them, especially the way he stretches out "train". He sounds very different from his vocals in Hors D'oeuvres. I wanted to use Primus's cover but it didn't really work with the other songs.

8: XTC - Are You Receiving Me? (3:03) (1978): Upbeat pop song with frustrated lyrics.

9: The Residents - The Booker Tease (1:04) (1978): A strange, short instrumental. I recently read a comment by someone who said that this was the only song he could think of that was sarcastic. I don't see it as sarcastic; I just enjoy it, because I'm crazy. I wonder if the title is a play on Booker T. Washington's name.

10: They Might Be Giants - They'll Need A Crane (2:28) (1988): Upbeat pop song with sad lyrics.

11: Mike Doughty - (You Should Be) Doubly (Gratified) (3:07) (2009): From the guy from Soul Coughing, who says he's not that guy anymore. I feel like I should know what this song is about but I can't figure it out.

12: John Vanderslice - D.I.A.L.O. (3:11) (2009): I like this song.

13: Einstürzende Neubauten - Hospitalistiche Kinder / Engel der Vernichtung (5:08) (1983): Random noises and clanging, along with muttering in German. That's what I call music!

14: OOMPH! - Beim ersten Mal tut's immer weh (3:57) (2008): More German hardness. My translation of the chorus: "It always hurts the first time, but tonight you'll see already, it hurts even more the last time." The video (at least, one of them) involves a middle-aged man meeting a 15-year-old girl to have sex, but instead she violently murders him. This makes no sense to me. The age of consent in Germany is 16, so why wouldn't he just aim for someone slightly older and not risk prosecution?

15: Metallica - The Judas Kiss (8:00) (2008): This is from their latest album, which I think is their best. Of course, I'm one of those people who likes their later stuff more than their earlier stuff, so I can't be trusted.

16: Them Crooked Vultures - New Fang (3:48) (2009): From the band composed of the guy from Nirvana and Foo Fighters and the guy from Queens of the Stone Age and the guy from Led Zeppelin, whose age is close to that of the first two combined. I thought I should listen to them so I put them on here. I just think the song is okay; nothing special. It kind of reminds me of Franz Ferdinand.

17: Captain Beefheart - Sue Egypt (2:57) (1980): Not many Captain Beefheart songs can be said to be pleasant, but this is pleasant to me... probably not to anyone else!

18: The White Stripes - The Denial Twist (2:35) (2005): Some of the lyrics in this song were surprisingly relevant to me for a while so I kept listening to it. I like what Jack White is doing with his vocals but I don't know what it's called, which makes me wish I knew more about music.

I want you to dig [25 Nov 2009|07:33am]

I did that thing I do twice a year where I put 80 minutes of songs I'm currently listening to, or that I think I should listen to, on a CD (and now my mp3 player) and then I listen to that a lot.

I find assembling mixes to be an enjoyable kind of thing, figuring out which songs fit and how they would go well together. Since I like all kinds of different music, it's a challenge to get them to work together. Normally I keep similar things in the same place (for example, preventing the metal songs from beating up the indie songs), but with this one I have all kinds of different styles commingling and I think it works.
